When you go to their website for schedules they say arrive at least 15 min before departure. We arrived at 8:30 am. It’s 10:45 am right now and I’m still in 2nd line waiting. I don’t think I will get a ferry until noon. They let in only 10 cars at a time. We have seen 3 ferries leave us so far. Commercial trucks keep coming on left most lane and getting on like workers, UPS etc that take spots of 2 cars. People are fed up. Terrible. I would have paid to have a reserved ferry.
Nice service being free, wait time can be pretty long at certain times and parts of the season so plan accordingly. We are here in July and our wait was an hour and a half.
Not too much room in the boat itself to sit. I think one is mainly intended to sit in their car or stand on the rail. It can get pretty tight as they pack the cars in and people leave their doors open making it impossible to pass.
The ride is nice as the vessel meanders through the sandbars. Its pretty easy to get disorientated as it S curves around the buoys.
First come first serve, staff was helpful, no charge. Just park in line and go in to the. Photo ID required of course your drivers license works. They’ll come to the car and check you in. Make sure you get here plenty early in case there’s a line.
Dock workers fast and efficient. They get people on and on the way as fast as they can. People bitching because the ferry can only hold so many.
Got here at 9:30 for the 10 o’ clock ferry and sat here until 12 in traffic for the ferry only to be told it was due to traffic. I don’t believe this. Terrible service; there is no way within any reason that a wait for a ferry should take up nearly 3 hours. We even got up early to get here. A half of a day of vacation shot as a result.
This is a free trip from Hattaras to Ocracoke. Stop by Howards Pub in Ocracoke for a casual bit to eat and a beer. Trip is a little over an hour long as the shortest distance between two points may be a straight line, but because of storms the waterway is shallow in points so the channel is marked strategically. The time may vary depending on how bad the storm season was. Several years ago the trip was shorter but the storms have made it necessary to remap the voyage. This is a relaxing trip and worth the time as the scenery is beautiful. Come back from Ocracoke around sunset and it is a wonderful treat to see the sun slip away and the stars fill the night sky. Ferry runs till midnight so gauge accordingly.
Loved our visit here. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Could get crowded at times and have wait times of around 1 hour to board the ferry.
Visit hatteras island during vacation and came across the hatteras ferry and decided to take the hour ride to Ocracoke. This was a wonderful experience and the best parts were that we can drive right into ferry with vehicle and also its FREE! The 1 hour ride was spectacular, the next time I plan to do it during sunset. The ride was smooth and relaxing.
